Description: Inverted Narratives
New Directions in Story-Telling

Early directors D.W. Griffith and Lois Weber develop the radical language of cinema narrative through audience-friendly melodramas made for nickelodeon theaters. Experimental fantasies are depicted in such independent productions as Moonland (c. 1926), Lullaby (1929), and The Bridge (1929-30). Depression era films by socially-conscious filmmakers reshape drama as demonstrated in Josef Berne's brooding Black Dawn (1933) and Strand and Hurwitz's biting Native Land (1937-41): each pictures a raw reality. Parody and satire find their mark in Theodore Huff's Little Geezer (1932) and Barlow, Hay and Le Roy's Even as You and I (1937). David Bradley's Sredni Vashtar by Saki (1940-43) boasts an inadvertent post-modern attitude.

The House with Closed Shutters (1910) D.W. Griffith & G.W. "Billy" Bitzer

This is the very first, (March 24,1910 USA) Oz version. Enjoy!
Everybody has seen The Wizard of Oz, but few people know that it wasn't the first version filmed, actually... it was the FIFTH!
There was a version first shot in 1910 by Selig Poliscope Co. then another one in 1914, 1925, 1933 and finally the classic version in 1939 (and WE complain about remakes!)
The movie isn't really based on the books but on a stage musical.

Description: William Shakespear's "Richard III." Shakespeare's tragedy of the hump-backed Duke of Gloucester, who rises to the throne of England by chicanery, treachery, and brilliance, only to find that his own methods have prepared the groundwork for his downfall.

This is the oldest surviving complete American feature film, which predates Birth of a Nation by a year. Frederick Warde, who plays Richard, would travel around the country showing the film (since there were but few copies), explain it, and offer question and answer sessions to the audience on both the film, Shakespeare, and the play.

The Movies Begin - A Treasury of Early Cinema, 1894-1913

Runtime: 379 mins
Language: Silent Movies
Country: UK/USA
Color: Black and White

Director: Various

Description: Amazon Description and Reviews
The home-video revolution has yielded a wealth of valuable compilations, but few are as miraculously definitive as The Movies Begin. Equally suited to home or classroom viewing, this authoritative five-volume set is a vital document of film history, providing a one-stop destination for anyone wishing to witness the first two decades of motion pictures. That period--from 1894 to 1913--saw movies develop at a breakneck pace, from the earliest "actualities" of the Lumière brothers in France to D.W. Griffith's audacious development of dramatic action in the Biograph shorts of the early 1910s. Sensibly organized into pivotal stages of technical and creative progress, each of these volumes represents the priceless value of film preservation; all 133 films in the set are presented in the finest condition available, from archival prints to complete restorations, and accompanied by music that perfectly captures the spirit of each film and the time of their creation.
Under the expert guidance of film historian David Shepard, this collection is uniquely comprehensive, with fact, fiction, and fantasy represented in equal measure. All major figures are included; it's fitting that one volume is devoted to astonishing shorts by movie magician Georges Méliès, while other volumes serve as "greatest hits" compilations of movie innovations by Edwin S. Porter, Cecil Hepworth, Max Linder, Alice Guy Blanche, and many others. The breathtaking growth of movies is fully apparent by volume 5 ("Comedy, Spectacle, and New Horizons"); most viewers will find this the most entertaining, but each volume is a revelation, offering films that haven't been widely seen since they were first produced. To understand and appreciate the foundation upon which modern filmmaking is built, The Movies Begin is truly essential. --Jeff Shannon

Additional features
Each DVD of The Movies Begin includes concise, authoritative onscreen program notes by film historian Charles Musser, offering illuminating details about nearly every film in the set. Volumes 2 and 3 are further enhanced by Barry Salt's historical commentary, defining the cultural contexts and creative advances of the films under discussion. Together, these valuable supplements serve as further proof that The Movies Begin was produced with the utmost concern for serious students of motion-picture history

Description: Fant?mas is one of the most popular fictional arch-villains and master criminals in the history of French crime fiction. He is the creation of Marcel Allain (1885-1970) and Pierre Souvestre (1874-1914), a team of French writers. Fant?mas was created in 1911 and appeared in a total of 32 volumes written by the two collaborators, then a subsequent 11 volumes written by Allain alone after Souvestre's death. The character was also the basis of various film, television, and comic books adaptations. His importance to the genre cannot be overestimated, as he represents the transition from the old-fashioned Gothic novel villains to modern-day serial killers.

Silent serials
1. Fant?mas - ? l'ombre de la guillotine (1913)
2. Juve Contre Fant?mas/Juve Against Fantomas (1913)
3. Le Mort Qui Tue/The Dead Man Who Killed (1913)
4. Fant?mas contre Fant?mas/Fantomas Against Fantomas (1914)
5. Le Faux Magistrat/The False Magistrate (1914)
The silent film pioneer Louis Feuillade directed five Fant?mas serials starring Ren? Navarre as Fant?mas, Br?on as Juve, Georges Melchior as Fandor and Ren?e Carl as Lady Beltham. They are regarded as masterpieces of silent film. His later serial Les Vampires, which concerns the eponymous crime syndicate (and not actual vampires) is also reminiscent of the Fant?mas series.

Description: A British captain (Dustin Farnum, recreating his stage role) comes to America after accepting the blame for embezzling charity funds in order to protect the honour of the real culprit’s wife. He eventually settles out west and gets married to an Indian woman (played by a Winnebago Indian woman named Princess Red Wing).
This is De Mille’s first film and the first feature-length movie made in Hollywood (although not the first to be made in the Los Angeles area). Originally a 1906 stage play, the title went on to become the only movie successfully filmed three times by the same producer-director. De Mille himself appears as the Faro dealer.

The Wrath Of The Gods (1914)

Produced and co-written by Thomas H. Ince, The Wrath of the Gods (aka The Destruction of Sakura-Jima) was a major undertaking that included a shipwreck (filmed off the coast of Santa Monica) and an erupting volcano. The five-reel melodrama starred future director Frank Borzage, blond Gladys Brockwell, Japanese actress Tsuru Aoki, and, making his screen debut, Aoki's husband, Sessue Hayakawa. The latter was appearing in Los Angeles with a production of Walker Whiteside's The Typhoon and Aoki easily ...

The Cheat (1915)

Silent

Richard Hardy, a hardworking stockbroker, labors overtime to keep up with the ruinous bills incurred by his beautiful but irresponsible wife Edith, a venal, spoiled socialite who is impervious to his pleas for fiscal restraint. Acting on what she believes to be an insider information, she impulsively embezzles $10,000 from the Red Cross charity she chairs for a stock tip. When she finds the money has been lost, she desperately turns to a Japanese ivory trader with whom she has been thoughtlessly flirting and persuades him to replace the money in exchange for an assignation. When her husband's long-awaited business deal finally materializes, she desperately tries to withdraw from their agreement by replacing the money. Angered and disappointed with her resistance to his advances, he uses a branding device to mark her shoulder as his property. Feeling violated, Edith shoots him in the shoulder and leaves. In order to protect his wife's reputation, Richard confesses to the crime and faces trial for attempted murder.

He´s used to overcome any difficult situation (which includes thinking) with the consummation (mostly injections) of any given drug available for the moment. The chief of police asks him to investigate a suspiciously wealthy man at a bathing resort, where most people seem to engage in riding the waves on inflatable fish. Arriving in the resort Ennyday meets the "fish blower girl", excels in a high speed fish chase and is happy to discover a big stash of opium. But will he solve the case? Is this the mother of all dope movies? Or the proof that Cheech and Chong are each one half of Douglas Fairbank´s soul reincarnated? And where did Ennyday get his television set, if you consider that the first transmission of live moving pictures wasn´t achieved before 1925?

A Natural Born Gambler (1916)

Our story centers upon the activities of a Negro fraternal organization, the Independent Order of Calcimine Artists of America. [Inside joke: "calcimine" is whitewash, and yet most of these black actors appear to have darkened their complexions with blackface makeup.] The group meets in the back of a saloon. Their leader, Brother Scott, is a lawyer who disapproves of gambling-- although, after breaking up a poker game, he doesn't object to appropriating others' winnings. Our protagonist is lodge member Bert Williams, described as a "walking delegate," who is clearly in arrears with both the saloon's barkeep, Hostetter Johnson, and with the lodge itself. Early on, he is compelled to remit the dues he owes (three dollars), which he does reluctantly. [Some prints of the film omit the next sequence: After leaving a meeting with his friend Limpy Jones, who is handicapped with gout and must ride on Bert's shoulders, Bert passes a graveyard where he overhears two chicken thieves splitting up their takings, saying "One for you, an' one for me." He and Limpy are convinced that they have overheard devils splitting up their souls, and flee in a panic; Bert actually pushing the crippled man over in his haste to run away. Limpy makes his way alone back to the saloon and tells the others about the frightening experience. Bert, meanwhile, encounters the thieves on the road and pieces together what really happened. He invites the thieves to accompany him back to the saloon, where Limpy is made to look foolish. Then Bert and Limpy appropriate the thieves' stolen chickens, and eject the men from their company.] Bert attempts to win back his recently-paid three dollars from the club's treasurer in a dice game, but Brother Scott interrupts and forces them to depart-- meanwhile pocketing the money they left behind. After Brother Scott exits, a sporty young man, Cicero Sampson, flashes a wad of bills he apparently won gambling, up north. Bert, impressed, challenges Sampson to a game of poker. A lookout is posted in front of the saloon. Bert wins Sampson's bank roll and his pocket watch-- by cheating, with Limpy's assistance unfortunately, just at his moment of triumph, cops bust the place and arrest all the players. Brother Scott represents the group in court, and seems to have a very friendly relationship with the judge. The judge orders that the spoils of the game go to Brother Scott, as his fee. He orders Cicero Sampson to leave town within three days, and sentences Bert to ten days in jail. In jail, Bert dreams of a poker game he plays by himself, with phantom opponents. He cuts the invisible deck and deals.

Description: Hell's Hinges (1916)

The whole French concept of "photogenie," that is, the mysterious je-ne-sais-quoi that activates mystical energies and brings to life certain people when they are filmed, centers around William S. Hart, that great cowboy of the middle silent era (they also loved Sessue Hayakawa, and some others).

And I agree that there is something fundamentally cinematic in the contemplation of Hart's face, as well as in the Western itself. Perhaps this Western isn't a standout by modern standards, but it's a rare relic of its era, and it still plays to those who love looking.

Description: In accordance with 'The Heritage Illustrated Dictionary of the English Language – International Edition', intolerance means '(1) the quality or condition of being intolerant.; (2) inability to withstand or consume. D.W. Griffith, the creator of the cinematographic narrative, extends this definition, presenting a masterpiece along four marks in human history. The first one is the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Then, the fall of Babylon, though the betrayal of the high priests to the King Belshazzar and his beloved princess and the conquest of the city (presently Iraq) by Cyrus. This set was the largest ever built in Hollywood. The massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve, in France is the third story. And a contemporary drama in 1916, with the story of the Dear One and The Boy and his involvement with The Musketeer of the Slums, showing the fight between classes in the beginning of the Twentieth Century. In the end, a beautiful message of peace. The VHS copy I watched was restored and presents the music composed and conducted by Carl Davis and The Live Cinema Orchestra. An outstanding movie, recommended to those viewers who love cinema as art and mandatory for any collector. 10/10

Judex is the title of a 1916 silent French movie serial created by Louis Feuillade and Arthur Bernède.

Feuillade had made two earlier serials Fantômas and Les Vampires about cunning criminals. Though popular with audiences the serials both drew criticism for glorifying outlaws. Feuillade answered these concerns by creating the hero Judex who had the sinister trappings of the flamboyant villains so popular at the time.

Judex was a mysterious avenger who dressed in black and wore a slouch hat and cloak. This costume is strikingly similar to the costume of the American pulp hero the Shadow and it is possible that Judex was an influence on the Shadow stories.

Judex anticipated later pulp heroes and superheroes in many respects. He was a masterful fighter, an expert at disguise, and boasted a secret headquarters. In the subterranean passages beneath a ruined castle Judex had a base outfitted with technological gadgets. He also had a secret identity, as Judex (the Latin word for judge) is a nom-de-guerre he has adopted in his quest for revenge.

The story is complex and is told in 12 chapters. The basic plot involves a corrupt banker named Favreux who is the target of Judex's revenge. Complicating matters is Favraux's beautiful and innocent daughter Jacqueline, with whom the avenger has fallen in love. A final element comes in the form of Diana Monti and her criminal gang who are working at cross purposes with Judex.

Judex was played by French matinee idol René Cresté and Diana was played by Musidora, who had previously played the villainess Irma Vep in Les Vampires.

Though Judex was made in 1914, the outbreak of World War I delayed its release. It was finally premiered in December 1916, and subsequently in wider release in 1917-1918. The movie was remade in 1959 by director Georges Franju. The story was shortened and simplified but remained true to the original. American magician Channing Pollock was cast as the mysterious hero.

Judex appears in several stories in the anthology Tales of the Shadowmen.

Description:

The tragic story of Don Jose, a Spanish cavalryman, who falls under the spell of a gypsy girl, Carmen, who treats him with both love and contempt and leads him into temptation and thus damnation.

When dashing cavalryman Don José Novarro (Harry Liedtke) falls under the spell of alluring gypsy dancer and smuggler Carmen (Pola Negri), he leaves his post and he gives up everything for her including his girlfriend and his honor, but she tosses him aside and goes after a matador. Consumed with rage, Don José tracks Carmen down to exact revenge for her betrayal. Ernst Lubitsch directs this tragic drama; Leopold von Ledebur and Paul Conradi co-star.

The Ernst Lubitsch/Pola Negri highly erotic version of Prosper Merimee's Carmen was filmed in Germany in 1918, but not released in the U.S. until the Spring of 1921. According to Negri's autobiography, the film's press showing took place in Germany in November 1918, shortly before the Armistice, and a battle was being fought so close by that gunshots could be heard outside the screening room.

Lubitsch's direction and the vibrancy of Negri's screen presence bring power and verve to this classic tale. Includes the bullfight sequence and Pola's gypsy dance with Spanish rhythms.

Pola Negri said in her autobiography that her father was Slovak "with probably more than a touch of the Bohemian gypsy in his blood," which may have appeared intriguing and exhilarant in the film world. Her evidence for her father's possible Gypsy (Romani) ancestry was his, as she said, olive skin and deep brown eyes.

The Dragon Painter (1919)

Tatsu is a slightly delusional painter who lives in the wilderness. He spends his days painting nothing but the image of his love, a princess he believes to have been incarnated as a dragon. His work is noticed by a servant of Kano Indara, an aging master painter who has no male heir or disciple to pass his skills to. The servant brings Tatsu to Indara under the belief that Indara can help him find his princess in exchange for allowing Indara to pass his knowledge on to him. Once there, Tatsu is led to believe that Indara's daughter, Ume Ko, is the princess. Tatsu agrees to stay, but now that he has found his love he no longer has the inspiration to paint the masterpieces that he once produced. Ume Ko pretends to kill herself so that Tatsu can once again find inspiration through his sorrow, and once he regains this she reveals herself to him. He has learned that "love must be a slave to art", and they live out the rest of their days together, with Tatsu painting her as he once did.

Description: Many people believe the best Griffith film is "Intolerance"; some stand by "Way Down East" and still others believe in "Birth of a Nation" despite all its problems. However, I think "Broken Blossoms" is the Griffith film which stands the test of time and still rings true today, over 83 years from its debut.

"Broken Blossoms" is the story of two wounded, abused, seemingly hopeless individuals who find comfort and strength in one another. The Chinaman (played by Richard Barthelmess) and little Lucy Burrows (played by Lillian Gish) are as different as night is to day, however they complement each other and give each other what the other needs; Lucy gives the Chinaman respect as a human being, he in turn gives Lucy affection and love.

What happens to the two souls is, in my opinion, one of the most heartbreaking turn of events ever filmed. The brutal treatment of Lucy by her father and the ultimate sadness of the Chinaman at the end of the film always reduce me to tears.

Those who believe that silent movies are inferior to today's craft really needs to see "Broken Blossoms" and open their hearts and minds to a world that is beyond beauty and beyond pain.

Description: Kino on Video, with Filmmuseum Müenchen, has done the right thing for film history in issuing three DVDs billed as "Gay-Themed Films of the German Silent Era." They vary in artistry, but as documents of society and its values, their value is immeasurable. Richard Oswald's Different from the Others (1919) may be the oldest "gay movie" of feature length in existence. Carl Theodor Dreyer's Michael (1924) offers a look at a rare silent work of one of the cinema's leading directors. And William Dieterle's Sex in Chains (1928) has a candid story of prison love, a subject that would be taboo for years to come.
Different from the Others is the most rewarding of the three new old relics of Weimarian queer cinema. Michael and Sex in Chains portray homosexuality circuitously, through art and incarceration, respectively. Different from the Others, as the name implies, addresses same-sex love with the head-on commitment of a speeding bus. The result is a template of a century's worth of gay stereotyping, politics, family relations, history, relationships, and medicine.
Different from the Others is an altogether fascinating spectacle. By way of latent pride, we're introduced to Leonardo, Tchaikovsky, and Wilde. We see a gay bar populated by swishing men and butch women. As concert pianist Paul Körner, thin and pale Conrad Veidt assumes effeminate poses suggesting one of nature's intermediary sexes, but the point of his essential nature is not lost. Just as his romance with a student catches fire, he is threatened with blackmail. Germany's notorious anti-gay Paragraph 175 promises to ruin him.
It's a pity that Different from the Others doesn't survive in total. Huge chunks of narrative are supplied by modern intertitles and still photos. Considering that Different from the Others was banned soon after its release, and the Nazis believed they had destroyed all existing prints and negatives, the survival of any footage is something of a miracle. Indeed, Oswald's 1927 remake, The Laws of Love, is believed to be entirely lost.
Of course Different from the Others heaves under passé acting styles and over-applied make-up, but its unveiling of ill-fated love amidst intolerance is all too plausible and contemporary. But even that asset can't compete with its unimpeachable historic value. Any movie that features psychologist and early gay liberationist Magnus Hirschfeld playing himself and propagandizing on history, sexual orientation, and gender roles deserves the highest priority for restoration and preservation. Different from the Others' outrage at political and social injustice is as confrontational and compassionate as anything produced on film in the intervening decades.
Adapted from a 1902 novel and the myth of Jupiter and Ganymede, Michael is foremost a pretty movie, lit with great care to create a silvery aura of long-ago exoticism. Visual artist Zoret (Benjamin Christensen) adores his protégé Michael (Walter Slezak), but complications arise when the Princess Zamikoff (Nora Gregor) comes between them. Michael is a movie of few incidents, languid and tableauesque. It has an admirable engagement with art and creativity, while the homosexual content is subdued. In fact, according to the arid but informative commentary of film historian Casper Tybjerg, some choose not to see any erotic subtext. That strikes me as silly. If the Master's obsession with Michael isn't carnal, the plot veers into meaninglessness. The presence of the Countess works only in the context of her compromising an already charged relationship between the two men.
Michael was directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, a man guaranteed a place in the film pantheon with The Passion of Joan of Arc. Unlike that masterpiece, Michael is not altogether satisfying dramatically. It relies on being visually sumptuous, while the characters remain distant. But it is the progenitor of a familiar genre of shame — the unrequited gay love story in which someone fatally crashes upon the rocky shores of passion. The survivor lands safely in heterosexualand, thereby reminding us of the sorry condition of the lavender male in movie history.
Sex in Chains (1928) was directed by and starred William Dieterle, who later made his name in Hollywood directing The Life of Emile Zola, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Portrait of Jennie. Sex in Chains is far removed from the rose-color sensibility of Production Code Hollywood; it dared to confront prison homosexuality. In fact, we're told so in the first intertitle, so we may gird ourselves for a dose of realism. Not that Sex in Chains couldn't have benefitted from higher production values. Though four years younger, it is visually more crude and less adventurous than the shimmering Michael. The acting, too, has too many moments of bug-eyed melodrama, and the score by Pasquale Perris is stultifying and generic. At times Sex in Chains looks amateurish, but then it surprises with a lyrical close-up or jump cut.
Sex in Chains is a braver and more honest prison movie than so many that came in its wake. It had the guts to treat what Midnight Express wouldn't touch 50 years later: that men behind bars have sex with each other and even fall in love. Life may be miserable for those on the outside, too. Lovely Mary Johnson as the wife of inmate Dieterle has her own case of sexual deprivation as she surrenders to the advances of her kindly but unappealing boss.
Sex in ChainsSex in Chains (such a lurid title!) is worth seeing because of its content, not its artistry. The restoration is watchable, but print scratches remain and faces are occasionally washed out to the point of being unidentifiable. But like Different from the Others and Michael, it could so easily have been dust by now. The once censured Sex in Chains was another unlikely survivor of World War II, and for that we may give thanks.

Director: William Kennedy-Laurie Dickson
Cast:
Joseph Jefferson ... Rip Van Winkle

Description: In 1859, Joseph Jefferson (1829-1905) "made a dramatic version of the story of Rip Van Winkle on the basis of older plays, and acted it with success in Washington. He arrived at Sydney in the beginning of November 1861, and played a successful season introducing to Australia Rip Van Winkle (...) and other plays. He opened in Melbourne on March 31, 1862, and had a most successful season extending over about six months. Seasons followed in the country and in Tasmania. In 1865 Jefferson (...) went to London and arranged with Dion Boucicault for a revised version of Rip Van Winkle. It ran 170 nights, with Jefferson in the leading part. (...) Jefferson would continue acting in this show for 40 years. Returning to America, Jefferson made it his stock play, making annual tours of the states with it." (wikipedia.org)

This is "actually a compilation of 8 films: Awakening of Rip (1896), Exit of Rip and the Dwarf (1896), Rip Leaving Sleepy Hollow (1896), Rip Meeting the Dwarf (1896), Rip's Toast to Hudson (1896), Rip's Toast (1896), Rip Passing Over the Mountain (1896) and Rip's Twenty Years' Sleep (1896). They are in the 3-disk boxed DVD set called 'More Treasures from American Film Archives, 1894-1931' (2004), compiled by the National Film Preservation Foundation from 5 American film archives. These films were restored by the Library of Congress from its paper print collection".

Life and Passion of Jesus Christ 1905

The Life and Passion of Jesus Christ is a remarkable relic from the very dawn of cinema. First released in 1902 by France’s Pathé film company, it was expanded and tinkered with for the next three years, reaching its complete form in 1905. Though popular for decades after its release, it has been unavailable on video or DVD until recently, when it was released on DVD with an early American Jesus movie, From the Manger to the Cross (1912).

Director: Yevgeni Bauer
Cast:
Vitold Polonsky ... Andrei Bagrov
Olga Rakhmanova ... Kapitolina Markovna, his aunt
Vera Karalli ... Zoya Kadmina
Mariya Khalatova ... Her mother (as M. Chalatova)
Tamara Gedevanova ... Her sister (as T. Gedevanova)
Marfa Kassatskaya ... Princess Tarskaya (as M. Kasazkaya)
Georg Asagaroff ... Andrei's friend (as Georgi Azagarov)

Description: Yevgeni Bauer's "Posle Smerti" is not a feature length film but for its sheer brilliance alone in terms of cinematic technique it deserves worthy mention alongside D.W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation" as one of the best films of 1915 and one that ranks big among the silent film classics.

At its root, it is a tale of the battle between the spirit world and the world of the living as Russian legend Vera Karalli's character attempts to seduce Vitold Polonsky's character from beyond the grave. Polonsky himself was the reason for the girl's death and it is an added element that he must deal with.

But beyond the story lies Bauer, who actually might have better understood the technique of lighting, tinting, and panning even more than the American Griffith. Of particular mention are his conscious efforts to relate the girl ghost as coming out of the shadows when she makes her appearances on earth, darker at first and then lighter as she gets closer to Polonsky. His purposeful approach to brighten her first appearance to the point where her face is a glowing ball of whiteness is remarkable.

The world of the living has its tone set in various tints...yellow at the outset, blue to reflect the night time, an appropriate red for the darkroom where Polonsky views his photographs, pink for Polonsky's first appearance in the social circle in some time (as he plays a recluse), and flat black and white to illustrate the ghost world.

The pinkish tones for Polonsky's social gathering, where he first views the tragic Karalli, is arguably the best scene of the film as the camera slowly pans from group to group to reflect the guests surprise that Polonsky has come at all. The story itself is quite engaging but has nowhere near the impact of Bauer's technique.

DVD viewers will also find a delightful surprise in the new score composed for the film by Nicholas Brown and performed by the ensemble Triptych. The violin-cello-piano score sets every tone imaginable at the appropriate time taking the viewer on a journey from peace to intrigue, to torment, and even terror.

The nutshell: worth watching for cinematic technique and the music alone. A possible precursor to Weine's "Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari" in terms of lighting and direction. The story sets Bauer up as Russian film's answer to Edgar Allan Poe...8/10.
