Description: Inverted Narratives
New Directions in Story-Telling
Early directors D.W. Griffith and Lois Weber develop the radical language of cinema narrative through audience-friendly melodramas made for nickelodeon theaters. Experimental fantasies are depicted in such independent productions as Moonland (c. 1926), Lullaby (1929), and The Bridge (1929-30). Depression era films by socially-conscious filmmakers reshape drama as demonstrated in Josef Berne's brooding Black Dawn (1933) and Strand and Hurwitz's biting Native Land (1937-41): each pictures a raw reality. Parody and satire find their mark in Theodore Huff's Little Geezer (1932) and Barlow, Hay and Le Roy's Even as You and I (1937). David Bradley's Sredni Vashtar by Saki (1940-43) boasts an inadvertent post-modern attitude.

This is the very first, (March 24,1910 USA) Oz version. Enjoy!
Everybody has seen The Wizard of Oz, but few people know that it wasn't the first version filmed, actually... it was the FIFTH!
There was a version first shot in 1910 by Selig Poliscope Co. then another one in 1914, 1925, 1933 and finally the classic version in 1939 (and WE complain about remakes!)
The movie isn't really based on the books but on a stage musical.

Description: William Shakespear's "Richard III." Shakespeare's tragedy of the hump-backed Duke of Gloucester, who rises to the throne of England by chicanery, treachery, and brilliance, only to find that his own methods have prepared the groundwork for his downfall.
This is the oldest surviving complete American feature film, which predates Birth of a Nation by a year. Frederick Warde, who plays Richard, would travel around the country showing the film (since there were but few copies), explain it, and offer question and answer sessions to the audience on both the film, Shakespeare, and the play.

The Movies Begin - A Treasury of Early Cinema, 1894-1913
Runtime: 379 mins
Language: Silent Movies
Country: UK/USA
Color: Black and White
Director: Various
Description: Amazon Description and Reviews
The home-video revolution has yielded a wealth of valuable compilations, but few are as miraculously definitive as The Movies Begin. Equally suited to home or classroom viewing, this authoritative five-volume set is a vital document of film history, providing a one-stop destination for anyone wishing to witness the first two decades of motion pictures. That period--from 1894 to 1913--saw movies develop at a breakneck pace, from the earliest "actualities" of the Lumière brothers in France to D.W. Griffith's audacious development of dramatic action in the Biograph shorts of the early 1910s. Sensibly organized into pivotal stages of technical and creative progress, each of these volumes represents the priceless value of film preservation; all 133 films in the set are presented in the finest condition available, from archival prints to complete restorations, and accompanied by music that perfectly captures the spirit of each film and the time of their creation.
Under the expert guidance of film historian David Shepard, this collection is uniquely comprehensive, with fact, fiction, and fantasy represented in equal measure. All major figures are included; it's fitting that one volume is devoted to astonishing shorts by movie magician Georges Méliès, while other volumes serve as "greatest hits" compilations of movie innovations by Edwin S. Porter, Cecil Hepworth, Max Linder, Alice Guy Blanche, and many others. The breathtaking growth of movies is fully apparent by volume 5 ("Comedy, Spectacle, and New Horizons"); most viewers will find this the most entertaining, but each volume is a revelation, offering films that haven't been widely seen since they were first produced. To understand and appreciate the foundation upon which modern filmmaking is built, The Movies Begin is truly essential. --Jeff Shannon
Additional features
Each DVD of The Movies Begin includes concise, authoritative onscreen program notes by film historian Charles Musser, offering illuminating details about nearly every film in the set. Volumes 2 and 3 are further enhanced by Barry Salt's historical commentary, defining the cultural contexts and creative advances of the films under discussion. Together, these valuable supplements serve as further proof that The Movies Begin was produced with the utmost concern for serious students of motion-picture history

Description: Fant?mas is one of the most popular fictional arch-villains and master criminals in the history of French crime fiction. He is the creation of Marcel Allain (1885-1970) and Pierre Souvestre (1874-1914), a team of French writers. Fant?mas was created in 1911 and appeared in a total of 32 volumes written by the two collaborators, then a subsequent 11 volumes written by Allain alone after Souvestre's death. The character was also the basis of various film, television, and comic books adaptations. His importance to the genre cannot be overestimated, as he represents the transition from the old-fashioned Gothic novel villains to modern-day serial killers.

1. Fant?mas - ? l'ombre de la guillotine (1913)
2. Juve Contre Fant?mas/Juve Against Fantomas (1913)
3. Le Mort Qui Tue/The Dead Man Who Killed (1913)
4. Fant?mas contre Fant?mas/Fantomas Against Fantomas (1914)
5. Le Faux Magistrat/The False Magistrate (1914)
The silent film pioneer Louis Feuillade directed five Fant?mas serials starring Ren? Navarre as Fant?mas, Br?on as Juve, Georges Melchior as Fandor and Ren?e Carl as Lady Beltham. They are regarded as masterpieces of silent film. His later serial Les Vampires, which concerns the eponymous crime syndicate (and not actual vampires) is also reminiscent of the Fant?mas series.

The Wrath Of The Gods (1914)
Produced and co-written by Thomas H. Ince, The Wrath of the Gods (aka The Destruction of Sakura-Jima) was a major undertaking that included a shipwreck (filmed off the coast of Santa Monica) and an erupting volcano.
